ABSTRACT:
Gender-based hate crimes like the murder of Lawrence King demand that our understanding of gender evolves. Gender affects everyone, and we need deeper examination of the pervasiveness of gender and gender experience in all our lives, from trans and gender non-conforming experiences to those of queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual/pansexual, and heterosexual individuals. Those who perpetuate violence against queer or gender non-conforming individuals do so not because of any hard knowledge of their sexual proclivities but because their gender presentation, in the eyes of the attacker, does not measure up to some arbitrary standard of maleness/masculinity or femaleness/femininity. Increasingly, mental health clinicians are encountering gender issues more frequently, not only among our trans and gender variant clients, but within our lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and heterosexually identified clients as well. We need more in-depth knowledge of gender-based psychotherapeutic concerns, beyond the "T" in LGBTIQ. When we come to greater awareness of the Universal, that which unites us all, finally, we can then approach the unique clinical, psychological, systemic, long-term, and other external and internal mental health concerns of the transgender, transsexual, genderqueer, intersex, and gender non-conforming communities, which often transcend general mental health needs.

GOALS
Workshop participants will gain:
• Increased knowledge and familiarity with terms, definitions, nomenclature
• A greater understanding of the general and clinical differences between gender identity, gender expression, sexual identity, and sexual preference
• An increased awareness of gender in clinical contexts including trans* (-gender, -sexual), gender non-conforming, and genderqueer, but also lesbian, gay, bi/pansexual, and heterosexually identified clients
• An increased awareness of how gender intersects and interacts with sexuality, across hetero-normative/typical, gender-normative/typical space, as well as queer and trans space
• An increased awareness as clinicians of internalized gender-phobia, trans-phobia, and homophobia that can inform our practice
• More in-depth knowledge of clinical, psychotherapeutic concerns and unique mental health needs of trans and gender non-conforming clients, some that transcend the universal mental health needs of general populations
